Pictures Coming Soon!

I would just like to quickly say that my sculpture teacher took a bunch of pictures of all of my class' final projects last week and she will send them to us sometime soon with our term marks. I will post pictures of my phone project as soon as I get them! I am pretty happy with how my phones turned out. I wish I had time to make more so I could have filled the space a little better, but paper casts take a while to dry and some didn't work out. My teacher did ask me if I could make a couple more for the First and Second Year Show of student art that will take place in January or February of next year. I'm excited to see how they will look in the show!

Also, I have decided to do this thing called the "Thirty Day Challenge." If you have a Facebook account, you probably know what it is from seeing friends post theirs. Every day for 30 day, I have to post a picture and answer a question or complete a task. I never really wanted to do it, but it eventually turned out to be one of those things where the more I saw it, the more I thought about what I would say for those days. So, here goes. I hope I am able to keep up with each day (I am starting tomorrow so it is easy for me to keep track of what day I'm on)!

Last Day of Class

Today was officially my last day of class in 2010. It doesn't feel any different yet, but I'm sure when I wake up well rested tomorrow morning, it will have settled in that I don't have to rush out to catch the bus for class. I really wish I could sit back and relax for the whole week, but exams start on Monday! I only have 3 this term, and they are all in the same week. It would be nice to have a little more time to study in between my exams, but since I will be home by December 11th, I won't complain.

This past weekend, I went to visit Paul in Barrie. It was nice to finally see each other again and spend some time together. We watched Up (I love that movie!), hung out with some friends, went to the mall, made a ginger bread house, and took some pictures for my iStock portfolio with Paul in his paramedic uniform.

Weekend Project

For my final sculpture project this term, we have to pick a spot in or around the sculpture room to make an installation that incorporates multiples of an object. I have chosen the emergency phone that is attached to the wall in the hallway, shown below.

The object I have chosen to duplicate is a phone receiver. My concept is about how this "emergency phone" is now useless and in a sense obsolete, like a cord phone or pay phone, because of the popular use of cellphones in today's society. If I am in danger, why would I run to a pay phone or emergency phone, when I can just reach into my pocket and dial 911 on my cellphone?

So far, I have managed to make 10 paper casts of my phone out of paper from a phone book. To attach the two sides, I am carefully sewing the two halves together. Below is a picture of my phone and 5 completed casts.

I will continue to make more casts this weekend and install my project on Tuesday morning for critique. For the installation, I will be hanging the phones from the ceiling so they fall in front of the emergency phone and deny the viewer access to it. By hanging the phones, it will reference a phone that is "off the hook" and useless.

Can't think of a good title.

As I enter into the second last week of this term, I am constantly amazed at how fast the time has flown by! I've been busier than ever, trying to get research papers, concept journals, french skits, and projects done for the end of the year. Today is finally a day where I can have some downtime and stay home as I work instead of running about.

This past weekend, Emma came to visit me and had such a fun time together! Things have changed so much since she left for university 4 years ago, but I can't believe how the time and age difference between us just seems to disappear whenever we're together. We ate lots of snacks and hit up the gigantic mall near me to get some Christmas shopping done.

Last night, I went to the annual Art and Art History Awards Ceremony at Sheridan. Each year they give out awards to students who have done well the previous year in various courses. A bunch of my friends and I were all on the list to receive awards. I was awarded the Art Gallery of Ontario Award for "excellence in Photography 1." It was a really fun night.

Drawing Project

Here is the final product which I said I would post. It's not the greatest picture of it, but it will do. Again, it is a green pepper made out of a wicker basket. I would still like to go back in and fix up the shadow a bit when I get it back, but I was so excited to have it done! I won't have any more projects in drawing for the rest of the term now that we are doing life drawing. Now I am busy working on a research paper for my art history class, a critical journal for visual culture, and working on all my final projects in my studio classes. This weekend, Emma is coming up so we can both take a nice, temporary break from work! I'm excited to have another visitor!

iStock Update

Well, it has been just over 3 months since my first post, where I said I had 60 pictures on iStock and 3 downloads. Today, I am happy to say that I now have 120 pictures and 15 downloads. I remember starting out at iStock at the beginning of the year and being frustrated from getting so many rejections. I wanted to quit so often, but I was continually encouraged to stick with it, and I'm so glad I did! I have learned so much since January and I still have so much to learn! Thank you to all of my amazing models and to all who have helped me come up with ideas and encouraged me! I never thought I would be here, and the best thing about it is it can only get better from here!

Studio Love

Well, almost a week has gone by and I have been very productive! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to have a break after my midterms were over, because I needed to get some work done on my studio classes. In sculpture we are learning about casting objects in various medias and how making multiples can change the meaning of the original object. I chose to cast a little owl sculpture I found at the dollar store. I did a project that included casting the object in wax several times and then altering the form of the wax piece. It was very fun to do. Our next project was to make a paper cast of the object, and I really liked how the details of the owl showed up with the white paper.

In drawing, we have a project where we have to take a natural object and draw an artificial texture on it, or take and artificial object and draw a natural texture to it. I chose to draw a green pepper with a woven, wicker-esque texture on it. I am very happy with how it is turning out, and I will post a picture later. This weekend, Emma and I are both going home. It will be nice to finally have a break from work, work and more work. I will have to take photos for my last photography project of the term, but I am excited to finally be able to work from home!

New Camera: Results

What a week! I am so happy to finally be able to say that my midterms are done! I feel like I did pretty well on both of them too, so that's good. A couple posts ago, I mentioned a new film camera I got. This weekend I was able to get batteries and film for it and load it up for a test run. I had the pictures developed today and am quite impressed! Here are a few of the shots:
